Web Sites Which Publish Fake News and Other Hoaxes

Web Sites Which Publish Fake News and Other Hoaxes

A small group of morally-challenged individuals have discovered that there is a great deal of money to be made by publishing fake news articles. These rags publish ridiculous headlines like “Monsanto is Killing Your Children”, “Ukrainians Worship the Devil”, and “Hillary Clinton’s Secret Affair with Vladimir Putin”. These inflammatory headlines are then promoted though social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. The owners of these sites make money from ads that display on their sites when people read the articles. It appears that the more inflammatory and unbelievable the headline, the better it spreads through social media. Debunking these stories can be almost impossible, as the “facts” they contain are unverifiable and therefore unfalsifiable. Although there is no evidence that Hillary Clinton is having an affair with Vladimir Putin, there is also not evidence that she is not having an affair with Vladimir Putin.

A few of these web sites may be run by truly insane people who actually believe what they publish, but if so that is a small minority. One of the proofs of this is how obviously fake the articles are. Old and heavily debunked articles from several years age are routinely updated with new dates and names and republished as new stories. Some site owners may believe that they are trying to shift public opinion by convincing the public to believe outrageous lies. Followers of this Overton Window theory believe that by making wildly unbelievable and bombastic claims, their slightly less unbelievable claims will feel more acceptable to readers. While this certainly may be true, that does not make it a morally acceptable strategy for discussing public policy. Other site owners may feel that they are simply “talking to their base” and that this relieves them of any moral duty to tell the truth. This is a reflection of the sad state of moral thinking in our society today. A few sites claim to be “humor” or “satire” sites and exist mainly to provide links which people can use to fool unsuspecting victims on social media. These sites will sometimes post a disclaimer in the site footer, but often these disclaimers will disappear and reappear over time. A small number of sites on our list are simply government-funded propaganda sites which post ridiculous claims from tyrannical governments which want to improve their public image or attack the public images of their opponents.

The sites on the list below are a mix of all of these types of sites. Strict categorization is not simple as many of these sites exist in multiple categories or switch between categories based upon whatever proves to be most profitable at the current time.

Each of these sites may, at times, publish legitimate news articles. This is a useful technique for making the illegitimate articles harder to spot. The fact that a home burglar doesn’t rob houses three nights a week does not make him any less of a home burglar. The fact that some of these sites occasionally posts a legitimate article does not make the publication itself legitimate. Any news site will occasionally publish a poorly-researched article. To earn a spot on this list, the publication must show a clear disregard for the objective truth. We all know how terribly mainstream media outlets like ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN fail to promote legitimate news stories. The promise of alternative media is that we can do better than traditional centralized mass-media. The publishers listed above are purposefully failing to do better. They are actually doing a worse job than the mainstream media — something many of us once thought impossible.

Look you can't put up sites and then say they publish legit stories while at the same time saying they publish illegible stories.

What is the difference then between att news sources? You obviously have your own ax to grind right?

Putting this up has not helped raise the bar.

@SteveNienhaus "Look you can't put up sites and then say they publish legit stories while at the same time saying they publish illegible stories."

I'm assuming you mean "hoax" when you say "illegible", and yes, yes you can put these sites in this list because that's exactly what they do.

Who's really the one with the ax[sic] to grind?

sadly the bullcrap comes from the left and the right ! most of these sites are what I call manure spreaders ! and it`s hard to believe anyone is simple minded enough to fall for their crap !

Veterans Today is totally legit.  This is BS.

@GaryMialocq Legit? What in the way it claims 9/11 was an Israeli-sponsored attack, and that the Holocaust never happened? Same with Sandy Hook.  And of course the Paris attacks... Israel.

I suppose if you're massively anti-semetic and think Putin is a great leader, then yeah it's legit...

Anyone with any sense can conclude that Putin is not having an affair with Clinton. My God, that man is definitely not so horny as to have an affair with that cow.

The glaring omission of Fox News tells me right off the bat this article and site is nothing but a hoax.
*drops the mic*

@DerrickStewart CNN, NBC, CBS all have terrible fact check records.  Rush LImbaugh for instance blows them all away on fact check evaluations.  WHen someone like Rush makes an opinion known, you know from how he frames it that it's opinion.  Everyone is entitled to an opinion but NOBODY is entitled to pretend to be posting facts when they are not facts in the name of the official media of a country.

Fox was generated because conservatives quite watching dip-wad central news.  FOX IS OWNED by yet another GLOBALIST who is in league obviously with the banking cartels.  And when an issue comes up that is non-negotiable (eg. a chance of getting a president who will work to end the illegal federal reserve system) then FOX LEADS THE CHARGE in BETRAYING true conservatives.  However in order to gain respect of conservatives they had to be 'fair and balanced' on some things.

WHy for instance they are reporting with cheery voices about Hillary Clinton when they should instead be insisting that she be indicted for multiple capital crimes should show anyone that they aren't truly conservative OR fair and balanced at the core.

PS you people don't even have a contact link do you?  I do.  Because I'm integrable enough to be held accountable for what I say

Speaking of 'fake propaganda' folks...this website starts right off with 'monsanto is killing your children' as an example of a bogus headline.

The science shows this.  1) Roundup was claimed as non-harmful to humans since it doesn't attack the metabolic pathways of humans.
2) Roundup DOES attack the metabolic pathways of critical gut bacteria

So when roundup gets in our bodies it diminishes our digestive processes, and our digestive tracts suffer damage sometimes.  The receptors get damaged we know by Gluten often but other things begin to be a problem also as the digestive processes are diminished.

So... yeah it's a viable headline.  I DO NOT SEE MEANWHILE HUFFINGTON POST.  I can show you ARTICLE after ARTICLE that are scientifically debunked and I can show you the elaborate details on their articles.  Heck it's easy.  Just pull up random articles and within a couple I'll find one.  They're horrible!

But..you don't list huffpost do you?  Nope.

So maybe 'fortliberty' should be on my list.  How about if I just clone your article and put in the correct websites that actually have proven fallacies in their fact check records?  At least with infowars it's apparent when Jones or whoever is giving an opinion.  WHEN THEY GIVE FACTS they conscientiously SHOW YOU the actual papers that back the fact often.

NICE PROPAGANDA PIECE...huh? Several of the sites this writer for the Gov. lists are quite legit. I haven't been on all of them so I can't speak for all of them but I would take info from ANY of them before I would from CNN, FOX, or any/most of the "newspapers" .

RobertWeigel
RobertWeigel

@BarbaraMillerFisco PREcISELY.  The ones they do NOT list like CNN even have testimony of former talking heads who claim they tried to force them to report falsely.

These people are scum of the earth obviously.

Lol. This page is fake news. Some of the sites on here are pretty sketchy but the author takes this as an opportunity to list several that he has no proof whatsoever about. This is obviously an establishment authored hit piece.

@DonDakota precisely.  THey leave out the ones that have proven fact check discrepancies. comically silly

I don't know who published it, but the "Nazi U-boat found in Lake Ontario" was a popular hoax-story over the weekend.  Being a WWII buff, I read the story and when they called it the UX-789, well, I knew that was never a designation.  And, if one had made it thru the St. Lawrence seaway and sunk, it would have been recovered deadee ago.

Anyway, I googled it and - boom! - sure enough it was a hoax.

The Rundown Live has great news and has been sourced by msnbc, yahoo news and others. I don't know how you guys came to this conclusion. Opinions are like assholes everyone has them. Research is obviously more dangerous because you guys obviously do very little.

@KevinACannella "Monsanto is Killing your Children", while I didn't read the article I do know that our food supply is junk called food.  Bug spray and weed killers in the gene of the seed that stays and gets in your system is like taking a spoon full of slow acting arsenic.  New like all news has to be looked at objectively and use your brain for inductive and deductive reasoning to see if the story is true.  Like The Enquirer (paper) has written news for ages and use to be looked at as fake.  They busted a lot of people.  At least these sources are free to talk.  More than you can say for main stream news.

This is the obvious truth the fact that this blog may also profit from what they write doesn't take away from the fact that 14 of the rags listed here I've personally seen the complete BS the put out, all it takes is a topic that gets people slinging insults at each other. 800whistle blower, they've written the same article 3 times just with diffrent pictures, about the gay people throwing crap at people and wiping there backsides with Bible pages. It's possible it happened once, but 3 diffrent times and the only thing that changes is the picture. They do a huge amount of damage with finding credable news story's to read.

I find it ironic that Fortliberty is publishing an article like this...

DaleLeppert1

I am sure you are right about most of this. But in the same way, rat person is 99% healthy food. No doubt you are pushing an agenda for Monsanto. There are legitimate scientific studies showing their GMO foods to be harmful. No I will not be the one to provide the proof. I have already done my own research on it. You can either do your own research or just mindlessly believe this week page just like all the rest.

useyourname

Fortliberty.org pointing the finger at other websites is what we refer to as the pot calling the kettle black. Claiming that all of these sites are not legitimate even though they occasionally post legitimate articles is hopefully meant to be a joke. If you have to libel other alternative news sources to make your site seem more credible in comparison, then you lose credibility with me.

My advice to any one who gets their information from the media, mainstream or alternative, is to always always always consider the source. The first question you should ask yourself after receiving new information aka "news" is, "why is this source telling me this information right now?"

If you can think of one benefit that the source could gain from sharing the information with you, then question everything they shared with you. Fortliberty.org benefits from making this list for obvious reasons so we should question it's motives. Is this story altruistic or is it opportunistic?

RT.com actually is a pretty serious newspage though, you just have to filter the propaganda just as when you're watching Fox News or any other related News agency from Good Mother America. Also headlines like "Monsanto is Killing Your Children" are actually true and denying that fact is the actual hoax(sad but true, just do some google research).

JanetteMarshallGood
JanetteMarshallGood

@MarionettaChan @Peterpan23 I am a GMO idot because that junk they call food almost killed me.  Literally, I was jerking and fell asleep under my car wheel, more than once, and the High Fructose Corn Syrup, was like drinking liquor to my body.  30 days and getting it out of my system was like getting medical cure.  Yes the junk they call food is killing people.  Are you a Monsanto employee?  They do troll sites too.

@MichaelWade @Alpha98011 I was just about to say the same thing Michael to Alpha98011.  They all spin news to suit there own agenda. I find it funny that these liberal sites are now telling us that these sites are fake news agency's. Well the liberal motto "is tell a lie long enough and people will believe it"
