Web Sites Which Publish Fake News and Other Hoaxes

Web Sites Which Publish Fake News and Other Hoaxes

A small group of morally-challenged individuals have discovered that there is a great deal of money to be made by publishing fake news articles. These rags publish ridiculous headlines like “Monsanto is Killing Your Children”, “Ukrainians Worship the Devil”, and “Hillary Clinton’s Secret Affair with Vladimir Putin”. These inflammatory headlines are then promoted though social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. The owners of these sites make money from ads that display on their sites when people read the articles. It appears that the more inflammatory and unbelievable the headline, the better it spreads through social media. Debunking these stories can be almost impossible, as the “facts” they contain are unverifiable and therefore unfalsifiable. Although there is no evidence that Hillary Clinton is having an affair with Vladimir Putin, there is also not evidence that she is not having an affair with Vladimir Putin.

A few of these web sites may be run by truly insane people who actually believe what they publish, but if so that is a small minority. One of the proofs of this is how obviously fake the articles are. Old and heavily debunked articles from several years age are routinely updated with new dates and names and republished as new stories. Some site owners may believe that they are trying to shift public opinion by convincing the public to believe outrageous lies. Followers of this Overton Window theory believe that by making wildly unbelievable and bombastic claims, their slightly less unbelievable claims will feel more acceptable to readers. While this certainly may be true, that does not make it a morally acceptable strategy for discussing public policy. Other site owners may feel that they are simply “talking to their base” and that this relieves them of any moral duty to tell the truth. This is a reflection of the sad state of moral thinking in our society today. A few sites claim to be “humor” or “satire” sites and exist mainly to provide links which people can use to fool unsuspecting victims on social media. These sites will sometimes post a disclaimer in the site footer, but often these disclaimers will disappear and reappear over time. A small number of sites on our list are simply government-funded propaganda sites which post ridiculous claims from tyrannical governments which want to improve their public image or attack the public images of their opponents.

The sites on the list below are a mix of all of these types of sites. Strict categorization is not simple as many of these sites exist in multiple categories or switch between categories based upon whatever proves to be most profitable at the current time.

Each of these sites may, at times, publish legitimate news articles. This is a useful technique for making the illegitimate articles harder to spot. The fact that a home burglar doesn’t rob houses three nights a week does not make him any less of a home burglar. The fact that some of these sites occasionally posts a legitimate article does not make the publication itself legitimate. Any news site will occasionally publish a poorly-researched article. To earn a spot on this list, the publication must show a clear disregard for the objective truth. We all know how terribly mainstream media outlets like ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN fail to promote legitimate news stories. The promise of alternative media is that we can do better than traditional centralized mass-media. The publishers listed above are purposefully failing to do better. They are actually doing a worse job than the mainstream media — something many of us once thought impossible.

OH, I just looked at the list in detail, and it's clear now, you people have a specific agenda. Never mind...

LewRockwell is just fine, and should be removed. But TheDailyBell is missing. They have gone off the deep end of late spouting about how the moon landings and Hiroshima were faked.

Wow. Not one of my radical Right-Wing sites are listed. I must be doing something wrong.

So how is this any different than the websites where the left promulgates canards about the right?

Paul S M
Paul S M

@Surly Curmudgen There's a difference between biased reporting, and outright scaremongering and lies, often for profit.

Surly Curmudgen
Surly Curmudgen

@Paul S M @Surly Curmudgen   That is simply parsing. A lie is always a lie and biased reporting is lying.

Many left wing websites continue with  the total lie that the racist bigots are Republicans.

Yea... So what makes us secure that you are not set up to try and dissuade people from believing certain truths that certain people or groups don't want the American People to know about? Maybe you are mixing truth with lies yourself.

I know that some of the sites you have listed here are credible news outlets because their info is verifiable... This makes you the false news outlet.

Some of these sites are totally legit and on the up and up. This site seems a bit dubious.

Many of these are in fact fake, absolutely disreputable "news" sites. Most of them are radically right wing and are WORSE than Fox Lies.

But some of them are not.

Alternet.org, for instance, is a long-time, well-respected source of information that challenges the corporate slant of the mainstream, corporate media -- which, btw, are owned by 6 very large media conglomerates.

To explain why most of them are disreputable would take a book.

RobertWeigel
RobertWeigel

@GeorgiaNeSmith It is my overwhelmingly informed belief that GeorgiaNeSmith has no idea how infowars fact checks on it's actual claims compared to ....what do you like? CNN?  LOL  WHere reporters have confronted them for trying to compel them to report falsely on the regime changes for instance?

haha.  btw I don't even AGREE with Jones on his Trump opinion of late.  I think Trump is an actor in the current scenario but that is my OPINION and *I state it as such*.  I can supply the reasons WHY I form that opinion and compare them to other people's basis for theirs.

But it's still an opinion. Not an absolute fact.

WHen NBC OR CBS OR CNN post something as fact, they are THEN HELD TO ACCOUNT if that alleged fact turns out to be false.  SO IS RUSH LIMBAUGH.  SO IS ALEX JONES.

BOTH of them fact check way higher than the corporate news WHICH IS NOT SURPRISING because corporate news has completely corrupt backing.  The CEO's of ALL the mainstream companies are from the same elitist families crack head.  That cant' just happen accidentally.  It IS a conspiracy that they and all the banking heads and political controllers and near all heads of Ivy league schools  etc. etc. etc.  military industrial complex companies..ALL OF THEM save a token exception at Brown U. last I checked.... are from the same freaking family affiliations.

YOU TRUST THAT?

You're an idiot if you do obviously.  The odds are hyper astronomical that such a thing would happen without people overtly conspiring to keep other races out of those positions of power.

Viral Liberty needs to be added to the list too.

Yeah.  Several of the sites listed are 100% legitimate with legitimate journalism.  Just because you don't like conservative news stories doesn't make them fake or hoaxes.

Can any body explain to me how those sites make money  from their nonsense  ?

What? You included Prison Planet, but NOT the Drudge Report? They're both full of the same vitriolic bullshit. Might want to update the list. :D

@sjonesny70 POst some foundation for what you are saying...else your words just sound like 'vitriolic bullshit' as some knucklehead once put it

theprophetess
theprophetess

@sjonesny70 Drudge is a news aggregate site.  They don't write their own stories, the stories come from verified news services.  Just because you don't like the news it gives doesn't mean it's "vitriolic bullshit".

amburlington

Typical isn't it? You try to warn people but they are so wedded to titillating lies that they prefer them to good honest responsible journalism. It's just too easy to con people today because they are proud of being gullible, they even defend it. If I hear one more person criticise Snopes I'll throw up - Oh they are "just two people doing it from their bedroom" and "they have been known to make mistakes", Gordon Bennet!!!  If you're so all-wise, do the research yourself instead of pulling down those who do.

RobertWeigel
RobertWeigel

@amburlington Trying to figure who you are talking to in particular.  I don't pre-judge people myself and while I have evidence that indeed many people are 'wedded to lies' in one form or another, I post my absolute evidence before I accuse someone of the same.

This 'list' done by who knows who.... doesn't include snopes.  However there are certain topics that snopes *is* a hoax on.  Eg. the Obama birth certificate.  MAYBE FOR YOU you are wedded to them in some way?  Because i don't see how an unbiased person CAN DOWNLOAD the .gov birth certificate, EXAMINE to find that there are a few places where computer generated fonts are inserted in what otherwise appears scanned material in multiple layers nonetheless....

THAT IS NOT what one would put up if they were trying to certify that they had an actual birth certificate with those numbers on it!  NO..they would NOT put up a stinking pdf.  They'd put up a simple bitmap image.

THis pdf was created to spawn conspiracy theories and division obviously.  Snopes made the asinine claim that it was run through ocr!  BOLOGNA!  OCR s/w would have wound up replacing characters all over the document.  NOT just SELECT ones you would change if you were trying to turn say a live person's BC number into a dead person's BC number.

THrow up if you must.  But snopes is crap on certain issues.

Who makes YOU (Fort Liberty & Will Spencer) the arbiters of which sites are and are not fake news sites?  There are 83 sites listed here!  Who did the research to determine that they were all fake?  Do you know how long real research on 83 sites would take?  You know what?  I'm guessing you didn't do the research!  That makes you as bad as you say they are.

JosephMummerth
JosephMummerth

@Scanner fairly easy to check into them , a hell of a lot of them let you know right up front they are`nt real ! just means you`d rather believe anything than take the time to do a little research on your own !  not my fault you are stupid and lazy ! must be a liberal !

Paul S M
Paul S M

@gotermite Conspiracy enthusiasts claim Snopes is run by The Illuminati/Rothschilds/Whatever.  Obviously.  Anything that disagrees them is, to them, clearly a part of the corrupt plan of the "Elites".  It must be so easy being a conspiracy enthusiast!

SteveNienhaus

Look you can't put up sites and then say they publish legit stories while at the same time saying they publish illegible stories.

What is the difference then between att news sources? You obviously have your own ax to grind right?

Putting this up has not helped raise the bar.

Paul S M
Paul S M

@SteveNienhaus "Look you can't put up sites and then say they publish legit stories while at the same time saying they publish illegible stories."

I'm assuming you mean "hoax" when you say "illegible", and yes, yes you can put these sites in this list because that's exactly what they do.

Who's really the one with the ax[sic] to grind?

JosephMummerth

sadly the bullcrap comes from the left and the right ! most of these sites are what I call manure spreaders ! and it`s hard to believe anyone is simple minded enough to fall for their crap !

Veterans Today is totally legit.  This is BS.

Paul S M

@GaryMialocq Legit? What in the way it claims 9/11 was an Israeli-sponsored attack, and that the Holocaust never happened? Same with Sandy Hook.  And of course the Paris attacks... Israel.

I suppose if you're massively anti-semetic and think Putin is a great leader, then yeah it's legit...

BrendanMiles

Anyone with any sense can conclude that Putin is not having an affair with Clinton. My God, that man is definitely not so horny as to have an affair with that cow.

DerrickStewart

The glaring omission of Fox News tells me right off the bat this article and site is nothing but a hoax.
*drops the mic*

RobertWeigel
RobertWeigel

@DerrickStewart CNN, NBC, CBS all have terrible fact check records.  Rush LImbaugh for instance blows them all away on fact check evaluations.  WHen someone like Rush makes an opinion known, you know from how he frames it that it's opinion.  Everyone is entitled to an opinion but NOBODY is entitled to pretend to be posting facts when they are not facts in the name of the official media of a country.

Fox was generated because conservatives quite watching dip-wad central news.  FOX IS OWNED by yet another GLOBALIST who is in league obviously with the banking cartels.  And when an issue comes up that is non-negotiable (eg. a chance of getting a president who will work to end the illegal federal reserve system) then FOX LEADS THE CHARGE in BETRAYING true conservatives.  However in order to gain respect of conservatives they had to be 'fair and balanced' on some things.

WHy for instance they are reporting with cheery voices about Hillary Clinton when they should instead be insisting that she be indicted for multiple capital crimes should show anyone that they aren't truly conservative OR fair and balanced at the core.

Paul S M
Paul S M

@RobertWeigel @DerrickStewart ROBERT! HI!  I used to encounter you on Facebook, where you spewed the same baseless claims there. Good to see you've moved on old chap ;)

The thing with Fox, CNN, NBS, et al is that they don't literally make stuff up.  They're biased, sure, but they don't fabricate news.

Although Fox News is just ridiculous.  They copyrighted a lie! God bless America! "Fair and Balanced"... my hairy arse!

@RobertWeigel Integrable is an adjective used in mathematics.  It means capable of being integrated into an equation...able to fit into other integrated parts.  Or the ability to fit in somewhere.  Maybe you were trying to say that you have integrity?

RobertWeigel
RobertWeigel

Speaking of 'fake propaganda' folks...this website starts right off with 'monsanto is killing your children' as an example of a bogus headline.

The science shows this.  1) Roundup was claimed as non-harmful to humans since it doesn't attack the metabolic pathways of humans.
2) Roundup DOES attack the metabolic pathways of critical gut bacteria

So when roundup gets in our bodies it diminishes our digestive processes, and our digestive tracts suffer damage sometimes.  The receptors get damaged we know by Gluten often but other things begin to be a problem also as the digestive processes are diminished.

So... yeah it's a viable headline.  I DO NOT SEE MEANWHILE HUFFINGTON POST.  I can show you ARTICLE after ARTICLE that are scientifically debunked and I can show you the elaborate details on their articles.  Heck it's easy.  Just pull up random articles and within a couple I'll find one.  They're horrible!

But..you don't list huffpost do you?  Nope.

So maybe 'fortliberty' should be on my list.  How about if I just clone your article and put in the correct websites that actually have proven fallacies in their fact check records?  At least with infowars it's apparent when Jones or whoever is giving an opinion.  WHEN THEY GIVE FACTS they conscientiously SHOW YOU the actual papers that back the fact often.

Paul S M
Paul S M

@RobertWeigel To be clear: you're saying that Huffington Post is a "hoax site" because it hasn't run a piece on Glyphosate. Really?

Of course Fort Liberty will go on your list! You don't agree with it, therefore it must be Part of the Conspiracy, am I right?
