Obama Administration Rejected Help with Oil Spill Cleanup
I have been trying not to be too hard on the Obama Administration regarding their bungling of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. After all, this is Obama’s first real job and he’s a lawyer, not an engineer. It turns out that my forbearance in criticizing the Obama administration over this issue was largely unearned.
Three days after the explosion, the Dutch government offered to assist the United States by sending ships equipped with oil-skimming booms. It also provided a plan for creating sand barriers to protect the sensitive marshlands of the Gulf coast.
According to Geert Visser, Consul General for the Netherlands in Houston “The embassy got a nice letter from the administration that said, ‘Thanks, but no thanks.’”
Almost seven weeks later, the administration finally relented and agreed to accept partial Dutch assistance with the cleanup. The administration has not accepted Dutch ships, but has allowed the skimming booms to be airlifted from the Netherlands and deployed in the Gulf.
Part of the problem is the Merchant Marine Act of 1920, also known as the Jones Act. This act is a piece of protectionist legislation which requires that all goods transported by water between U.S. ports be carried in U.S.-flag ships, constructed in the United States, owned by U.S. citizens, and crewed by U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents. The provisions of this act make it illegal for the Dutch to come to our aid.
Geert Visser was noticeably confused by the administrations intransigence in refusing Dutch assistance, “What’s wrong with accepting outside help? If there’s a country that’s experienced with building dikes and managing water, it’s the Netherlands.”
The government is also making it difficult for the Dutch to provide assistance in creating sand barriers to prevent the spilled oil from reaching the gulf shores. Van Oord, a Dutch company and Deltares, a Dutch research institute provided plans to build 60 mile sand dikes and the government rebuffed their offer of assistance. The government has now changed it’s tune and has accepted the plan, but the Jones Act prevents the Dutch from operating in America’s coastal waters.
The United States Maritime Administration could issue a waiver of the Jones Act limitations, and has done so several times in the past. Doing so, however, would subject the Obama administration to criticism from labor unions who demand protection from global competition.

Late Wednesday evening[May5th], the State Department emailed reporters identifying the 13 entities that had offered the U.S. oil spill assistance. They were the governments of Canada, Croatia, France, Germany, Ireland, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Republic of Korea, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United Nations.

This makes little or no sense. If this administration can circumvent the Constitution, The Bill of Rights and every other piece of legislation necessary to carry out their agenda, they could have easily put in a special temporary piece of legislation. Then maybe a little pressure could be taken off of BP.

There is a covert agency investigating whether or not an Eco-Terrorist group was behind the explosion that brought down the rig. It is strange to me that it happened two weeks after Obama announced that he was going to allow more drilling. Now the lefty loons will block drilling for a decade or more. Obama wanted to maximize damage so the loons could have their way…Ban Drilling!!
Of course he will turn down help with the clean up. After all he is supplying our clean-up crews with garden rakes and baggies! I hope he is paying them well since by cleaning up with ancient tools they will have jobs for a long time.

Well this just gets me even more sick. Our government is not only choking on its own red tape, but this paralytic attitude is causing our Gulf to choke to death as well. President Obama – this is not a time to concern yourself with politics or labor unions. There is a higher concern at stake!

When you have a lawyer running anything common sense goes out the window. Hey they deal in words on paper. They do not deal in the real world of “get it done”. All the working people live in the “get it done world” and lawyers and politicians live in a world of “words on paper”. We can never know for sure if Obama addresses these various crises head-on (as he would have us believe) or whether he allows them to drag out for political gain. It is exceedingly clear to me that the latter has been true throughout all these supposed crises (housing, financial, health, energy and environmental) because of the huge regulatory, legislative packages that the Democrats have immediately pushed through under the guise of either “protecting” or “helping” everyday Americans. In fact, everything this administration does results not in protecting and helping Americans but in controlling our lives. Doubt me? See what comes of this Gulf oil spill.

This is what we mean when we claim ‘the government’ creates more problems than it ever solves. Here is a classic case of leaders who came from lawyers with no other skills to lead except for the ability to legislate more red tape and sue their way into history. Obama has no experience in the corporate world, which wouldn’t be a problem, in itself, except that he’s too arrogant to know he must depend on them to navigate his way in this administration. Instead, he declares war on them…identifies them as the enemy and circles the wagons to fight them every step of the way. Obama is out of his league and if he had integrity and character…he would admit this…he’s a monumental disappointment to all but the few who can’t see the way things really are because of Obama’s colon obstructing their view.

Anybody out there remember Rahm Emanuel’s comment right after the election about “…never let a good crisis go to waste?” The oil spill is a perfect example, and the administration (along with the Democratic Party) is already using it to push Cap and Trade. Yesterday’s defeat in the Senate of an attempt to keep the EPA from implementing rules which should in fact be voted on in Congress was helped in large part by citing the spill as reason enough to defeat it. Anyone looking at the big picture here-Cap & Trade, the coming U.N. small-arms treaty (global “gun control”), etc. has good reason to be alarmed at the speed with which these statist gangsters are operating.
Here is an example of a President that displays incompetence, ignorance, and arrogance. This has proved to be a deadly combination for Americans and wildlife alike. With this kind of leadership, is it any wonder that America is going down the drain at the speed of light?

(A fella retired from the oil patch…told me that there had been reports of a sub in the waters near that platform [probably a rumor, but...?] No one is paying attention to that kind of terrorism – and how would you prove it?) Maybe they didn’t think it would be this bad…but would help pass not only “Cap & Trade” but the U.N.’s “Law of the Sea Treaty” that even our Senator is being strong armed to agree to from “fear” of not having any say about our coastline. Our Congress doesn’t realize that they are letting ALL of their powers are being taken away and given to unelected commissions and boards (i.e. Health care Bill, Financial Reform Bill, etc). Andy h, you are absolutely correct about Obama not using outside help because of the Jones Act and protecting unions. However, he could waive the Jones Act in an emergency situation, which President Bush did after 911. He doesn’t want to waive the Jones Act, because Andy Stern, SEIU, AFL-CIO etc. would be unhappy with him. They have a LOT of control in the OBumma administration. Andy Sterne even helped write the healthcare bill for the benefit of the unions. I also agree that the radical environmental terrorists may very well have had a hand in this disaster. What a shame, the Dutch have the expertise and the most high-tech equipment for sure. I’m Dutch, living in the Netherlands, a country which western part lies under the sea level, also the area where I live, and yet I feel quite safe, protected against the sea by what this nation built up in water works during centuries…..

This administration has shown nothing but incompetence. All they can do is appologize when there is no need. I am so saddened and maddened by this delay this inaction..lack of reaction..it sat there for four days while they said its not leaking yet…why didnt they do something in that first four days? Now the people and animals suffer and die. The Navy needs to responsibly sonar this area to make a sort of electric fence to keep the massive amount of mammals swimming into the spill area. This is frightening..and sad..they took ONE shark out to deeper waters but it is sick..that chemical dispersant made it worse, but no one said hey wait a minute that is NOT a good idea at all..the Navy has irresponsibly blown mammals brains out with sonar for yrs..now is the time to use a sytem that evacuates them from this area. I wish I had thought of it sooner, but we were not told how bad it was..if anyone can continue with me to get to the union of cncerned scientists and the Navy, please do.

I posted a message right after the spill in the Gulf, and what I
said was that Obama would let this oil spill go on for a couple of
reasons. The first reason was he wanted this to become a bad situation, but it spiraled out of control and there is no end in
sight. Obama will try to make this a political thing so he can cut
off all drilling and pass his Cap and Trade fiasco.
The second thing is the fact that he hates big oil even though he got the most money from BP, he is finally meeting with the CEO of
BP and he will use this meeting to try and deflect the blame to BP,
but he has waited too long and the continuing spill and the blame lies squarely at his feet, all this meeting will accomplish is a planned photo-op to try and make himself look good.
Obama administration has refused all kinds of help from different
sources, and this will go down in history books as the Obama Spill.
This just makes you sick that a man in his position would deliberately refuse help to further his agenda. I would have to call that treason. His administration I believe has committed several acts of treason. Not following the constitution is a big one. Selling out to UN. Trying to make the UN the governing law of the world and our land. Obama has an obligation to protect American soil and people (I consider protecting American jobs the same as protecting people and welfare of people). Obama has deliberately not taken steps that he could have taken to speed the recovery from this national disaster. Here after an offer to help by right minded Dutch people he rejects their offer but 7 weeks later accepts the use of some of their equipment for protecting American land and beaches affected. Meanwhile he makes statements that he is looking to kick bp’s ass. Our great Country is under attack from within. Does any reasonable person believe that we do not possess the means to have mitigated this disaster early on. There has been no or slow response on purpose. Wreaking more financial havoc on our over-burdened resorces will speed up the collapse of America. THE BIGGER PICTURE is to discredit offshore drilling and push for NUCLEAR ENERGY. US has been involved in many backroom deals on this subject GLOBALLY. May 11, 2010 IDAHO was granted approval to build its nuclear industrial complex on a 5,000-acre plot of land. This is extremely important because until a few days ago, this particular land had been zoned for agricultural use only. But once the facts were revealed on just what a boon a nuclear power plant would have on the economy, this company didn’t have a whole lot of trouble getting that changed… According to the National Association of Manufacturers, a single new nuclear power plant can add $500 million annually to the economy.
Not only that, but the Idaho plant is expected to create roughly 5,000 construction jobs and more than 1,000 jobs during operations (with pay levels averaging $60k and $80k, respectively). Furthermore, according to Nuclear Street: “The projected revenue for the county and state is staggering. During construction alone the project should increase Idaho’s GDP by $5.3 billion, while $4.8 billion will flow directly through [the county].” Money talks. And a new power plant in Idaho would mean a ton of money for a ton of folks. Maybe that’s why an overwhelming eighty percent of local citizens voted for this company’s progress. But aside from the monetary impact and employment opportunities this plant will provide, there’s an underground, more clandestine reason this company’s so intriguing. You see, for the past several months, these guys have been engaged in secret talks with the Korean government.
It just so happens, the Koreans are on the cutting edge of nuclear reactor design… Not only do their APR-1400 reactors excel in quality, but they’re also billions of dollars cheaper than their competitors are. Other countries already have contracts in place with the Koreans, but so far, no one in the U.S. does — yet. But the key word there is “yet.” he secret meeting backed by $54 billion worth of U.S. government cash It’s common knowledge by now that Obama is embracing nuclear energy. In fact, in his State of the Union address, he called for dramatically increased nuclear reactor construction. In his own words: “[T]o create more of these clean energy jobs, we need more production, more efficiency, more incentives.
And that means building a new generation of safe, clean nuclear power plants in this country.” Shortly thereafter, Obama tripled the amount of loan guarantees for nuclear power to $54 billion in his budget request. He’s practically hemorrhaging money to get nuclear energy in place as soon as possible. $8.3 billion has already gone to build two plants in Georgia… And according to USA Today, he wants spending to increase dramatically through 2011. But what isn’t yet common knowledge is that there have already been numerous under-the-table nuclear energy agreements taking place for months. The photo of Mr. Hemingway evidence of one of those meetings…The Republic of Korea (that’s democratic South Korea, not the northern half run by lunatic Kim Jong Il) is now home to some of the world’s most advanced nuclear reactor technologies. Their brand-new, state-of-the-art APR1400 model reactor.
I believe the sentence for treason is “death”. If that is correct, then Obama, Pelosi, Reid, Emanuel and the majority of Obama’s posse in Washington, D.C. should be be on death row tomorrow and hanged the day after.

Janet: I tried to call Obama’s office at the white house this morning and leave a message regarding a news item I saw this morning on HLN. Two young kids, who are obviously very interested in science, and showed a lot of common sense, had come up with a possible solution to capping the leak and cleaning up. I was told, “If you want to leave a comment, call on Monday, when the office is open!” I said in return, “So, he is not interested in hearing about a possible way to FIX the oil leak”, to which I was told “Call this number, and given an 866 number”. I called it and was answered by a telephonist at BP. I did leave a message with her for the EXEC’S at BP, but we all know, THEY aren’t going to pay any attention. Sometimes the SIMPLE solution, instead of banging their heads for a SOPHISTICATED solution, could possiblt be the answer. But, I guess Obama has his own agenda and he doesn’t care about what is happening to the PEOPLE AND THE ANIMALS in the Gulf.
I believe its total lunacy that obama does not allow the Dutch to send their ships in and help to clean up the Gulf. He obviously doesnt really care about cleaning up the oil spill, or he would have accepted their help when they first offered it. This adm is clueless about being in power as they all seem to be offered and Ivy Leage Education which has made them demented and purged their minds of ny decency, common sense or morals. They are like the blind leading the blind and they will come to no good end I believe.
I saw last week on tv pictures of foreign aid ships sitting there ready to embark on whatever help they could, just waiting for the word form the “Oblamo” Administration. I call him “Oblamo” for good reason. He has not accepted any responsibility for one crisis since he became president. He blames everyone but himself. The truth is that he is so tied to unions, he doesn’t dare let any country help him get his job done. How can this whining wimp of a president look himself in the mirror every day & convince himself he is doing his job.
We know he isn’t & the unions are dictating Healthcare & Stimulus Bills & the next one is Cap & Trade. The person behind this mess is Ken Salazar who when in the Senate promoted & voted for increases in the Gulf oil & gas leases. Come on Oblamo, you were in the Senate when voting for the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act was passed in 2006. it’s no different than than ignoring the border security. What good is having a law if no one enforces it? He won’t.
Fact is: that experts in Mineral Management Services ignored the existing requirements. Under Salazar’s reign, MMS approved BP’s drilling without getting the permits required by law for drilling that might harm endagered species & routinely overruled warnings regarding the safety & environmental impact of drilling proposals in the Gulf.
So here you have it that Oblamo is covering up his own adminstration Secretary of the Interior for the mess he created just like he covered up his friend Franklin Raines, CEO of Fannie Mae while he kept two sets of books & allowed the banks to fail & Oblamo took the money to protect him! Is this what you voted for? Impeachment can’t come soon enough, but when are those braindead members of Congress going to wake up & file those papers?

If I recall corrrectly, three days after the explosion, the rig was still on fire and rescue boats were still looking for survivors. Makes you kinda wonder about veracity/timing of Mr. Visser’s claims. Maybe the Netherlands should publish the letter it received from the Administration turning down its offer to help.

I watched Huckabee lastnight and saw several clean-up solutions presented. If funds were put toward ANY of them (plain old HAY was a great absorbant for the shoreline), a lot could be done by volunteers. There are thousands of FL residents ready to work, if we’re needed.
BP – where’s the MONEY? I happen to agree with Pelosi on (only) one thing: stop the ad campaign and direct those monies toward clean-up and compensation to those who are suffering financial loss. You’re just pouring salt into an open wound.

I smell something quite strange. Awhile back Soros was putting money investments into a new oil field found in Venezuela. This particular oil field is going to require side ways drilling which is a technology that the U.S. has developed, and not been shared to readily. With a “pause” drill rigs are moving out, most likely not to return for years. Some of these rigs do have the side drilling technology and moving them to other countries is losing the technology. I would like to know if some of these rigs are headed for Venezuela, and the first proposed moratorium (now a pause) was deliberate. Soros again will fill his pockets if this is true. This needs to be questioned. The response and deliberate negative attitude for help from the Netherlands was stupid… Obama has used his “executive order pen” for lesser things. I wouldn’t be surprised if the U.S. has put money into this new oil field as well. Now could the government want to be in the oil business? We lose these drilling rigs we are screwed! I think this so called “pause” is going to last longer than they state, forcing rigs to move from several states coast lines.

Keyes on my November,2008,ballot,for President.He is a real American,who champions the right for everyone,yes,everyone;that concensus includes the unborn and aged.I only wish that I could have pushed one of those baby carriages alongside him,on the Notre Dame campus.

This is messed up..he was offered help yet turned it down….as president he is responcible for the american people and our country…at first he acted like he cared about our enviroment but this is the worst enviromental disaster this country has yet to see and what has he done let’s see….fly there a few times in 2 months,gets on tv and says bp will pay for it,and waite what 58 days to set down with them to make a plan,and turnes down help….he said he cares about the little man if he did he would not have turned down the help at any cost….if he is going to catch heck from people either way by accepting or rejecting help I would rather have some good come out of it and take the help…there is a lot at stake here a lot of things that can and will happen the sooner this is stopped and cleaned up the better off we all are….the exon spill was nothing compared to this…and the empact on the wildlife is still being felt even today…the orcas living in that area at the time for example there reproductive rate is now only 70% what it was before that oil spill….just last week a 12ft tiger shark was caught off florida coast weighing 800lbs he was no real danger to people bc he was disorented…after being caught he was taken and released in deeper waters…it is believed that he was a gulf shark..sharks have an incredible sence of smell this could send a lot of sharks to floridas coast…my concern is for the whale shark harmless to humans his food sorce is plankton…he opens his mouth takes in plankton and water,them let’s the water out..when this gentle giant migrates to the gulf as they do every year it could very well be his death sentence….this being a short list of the wildlife concerned how can obama claim to be enviromently friendly if he turnes down help to save it….not possible he is not.

Why is Obama saying “we will fight the spill with everything we got”, a month after he blocked the worlds best technology to pick up this oil. There is more behind this than the Jones act. America has similar technology on standby in Alaska and Washington State. The Valdese Star can pick up over 3.3 million gallons of oil a day. Why has it not been brought in? A high estimated of 127 million gallons of oil have leaked so far or about the content of 1 and ½ half supertankers. The capacity of this American made ship could have picked up over 200 million gallons had Obama had not been so politically motivated determined to sacrifice the Gulf for political posturing.
