Islamists Attack Peace Conference
Islamist activists dressed as women attacked a peace conference in Kabul on Wednesday as Afghani President Hamid Karzai gave his opening remarks to the participants. Karzai’s speech was interrupted by the sound of rocket fire and he interrupted his speech to say “Don’t worry. We’ve heard this kind of thing before.”
The rocket fire was conducted from approximately a mile away from the tent where the peace conference attendees were meeting. In addition to the rockets, three Islamists dressed in burqas and wearing explosives attacked the tent with small arms fire and hand grenades.
The three attackers in burqas were killed, at least one when he detonated his suicide vest. Three Afghani police and two civilians were wounded in the attack. None of the conference attendees were harmed.
The Taliban had previously announced they would murder anyone who attended the peace conference and Taliban officials called the Associated Press to claim responsibility for the attack.
Islam is often cynically referred to as “The Religion of Peace” by it’s critics and this attack certainly gives credence to those criticisms.
