ACLU Takes Stance Against Free Speech
The ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) has frequently called criticism upon itself with bizarre decisions regarding what freedoms to defend and what encroachments upon freedom to ignore. In general, their rule has roughly been “civil liberties worth protecting are ones we approve of.” That’s not so abnormal; most of politics consists of people acting in very self-serving ways.
Recently though, the ACLU board of directors has gone over the edge with a decision that stunned their supporters more than their critics. In a landmark change-of-face, the ACLU board recently changed it’s position to approve of government limits on political campaigning.
The ACLU’s historical policy has been very clear:
“Limitations on contributions or expenditures made by individuals or organizations for the purpose of advocating causes or candidates in the public forum impinge directly on freedom of speech and association. Their implementation poses serious dangers to the First Amendment. They should be opposed in candidate as well as referenda elections.”
The new ACLU policy is:
“The policy permits reasonable limits on campaign contributions to candidates. This contrasts with prior policy, which opposed all such limits. The revised policy acknowledges that very large contributions to candidates may lead to undue influence or corruption and, at a minimum, have the appearance of impropriety and undermine public confidence in the electoral system’s integrity.”
“Reasonable”, of course, being defined by the incumbents. Campaign finance limits are limits on free speech and they always benefit the incumbents. The fact that this ACLU policy change follows the election of a radical Marxist U.S. President does not appear to be coincidental.
President Obama has already stated that his administration will respond “forcefully” to the United States Supreme Court in regards to their recent decision to uphold the Constitutional rights of Americans to determine how to spend money on political causes. The ACLU appears to be filing right in line behind the President in his attempt to rig the next Presidental election in his own favor.
We have long known that the ACLU is a sham, neither interested in America or in Civil Liberties. Real civil liberty organizations like the CATO Institute have done a hundred times more good for the civil liberties of Americans than the ACLU. It’s time for all Americans to denounce the ACLU as traitors to the cause of liberty.
